The art of mosaics is an ancient medium providing historic images of life in earlier times, notably during the Byzantine Empire. Small pieces of glass, known as Smalti, are hand-cut and tightly fitted without mortar to create decorative images. Learn this technique and more, and go home with a unique, beautifully ornamented mirror
and your own small copy of an ancient mosaic made with Italian glass.
Kate Kerrigan has been a mosaic artist for 14 years. She has studied with mosaic
masters in Ravenna and Venice, Italy. Having embraced the history of this
ancient art form, her work employs classic traditions, techniques, tools and materials. Her compositions, drawn from her own photography, translate magically into
mosaic. Kerrigan produces, exhibits and sells her work in the Bay Area and Tahoe region. She has been recognized and awarded on both national and international
levels for her work. Originally from Wisconsin, Kerrigan currently resides in
Alpine Meadows, California.
