Martis Camp Community Foundation

Giving back to the community we love »

For the charitable organizations in the Tahoe Truckee area, 2020 was a year like no other. Essential fundraising galas were canceled, social distancing was enforced. Jobs were lost or reconfigured. Social programs were restructured to deliver services in a totally unexpected way. These organizations saw their lists of assistance requests getting longer … and longer …. and longer.  But in stepped the members of Martis Camp, who through the Martis Camp Community Foundation generously contributed to the MCCF, allowing continuation of our mission to assist the greater Tahoe Truckee region through grants to local nonprofits.
In the spring, as COVID-19 was impacting families and businesses in North Tahoe, the Foundation gave $176,200 to local nonprofits to support their efforts to react to the pandemic. This included large grants to Tahoe Forest Hospital System Foundation and the Sierra Business Council to support their heroic efforts to serve the community as COVID-19 was changing their service landscape in unprecedented ways. This fall, an additional 34 grants were made, totaling $277,350. The over $450,000 in donations in 2020 provided much needed funds in the areas of human services, education, youth development and recreation in North Lake Tahoe.
This grant process, which has taken place annually since 2015, begins when applications are submitted by area organizations. The MCCF Grants Committee members pore over the grant requests and reach out to each applicant. This year was particularly difficult, as on-site visits were constrained and some organizations were still not fully operational from their regular locations. But with a bit of diligence and a lot of follow-up, the committee was able to make their recommendations to the full MCCF Board by its October meeting. Grants were announced at the beginning of November.
