Martis Camp Folk School: Plein Air Oil Painting at Lake Tahoe

Putting the Art in Martis Camp

From the beginning, the arts have been an important part of life at Martis Camp. From architecture and interior design to summer concerts and Folk School classes to movie nights and storytelling around the campfire, we strive to bring the arts to you in every way we can.
We’re thrilled to host the North Lake Tahoe Plein Air Open at the Family Barn next Friday, June 16th. Twenty-five plein air artists will paint at the Concert Park Lake from 9:00 a.m. to noon. We hope you’ll stop by to view the paintings in progress and say hello to these artists from around the country. The North Lake Tahoe Plein Air Open takes place all week, from Monday to Saturday, at various locations around the Lake Tahoe/Truckee region.
Anke Hass will be judging the North Lake Tahoe Plein Air Open. Anke is a familiar face in the Family Barn Art Loft as a Martis Camp Artist-in-Residence. She teaches a wide range of art classes including drawing, pastels, watercolors and oil painting. We applaud her selection as a judge for the plein air event and look forward to a fantastic morning at the lake.
Next Friday evening, we hope you’ll join us for Pint & Paint Night* in the Family Barn Art Loft. No experience required! Follow along as an instructor walks you through the step-by-step process of painting a scene on canvas. Enjoy a beer, wine and dessert bar throughout the event, and end the night by signing your name on your new work of art. To sign up for Pint & Paint Night, log into the Member website.
Have you signed up for our Folk School classes? We’re fully booked for Adirondack Chairs at the end of June, but July and August are packed with artistic opportunities – Watercolors, Photography, Encaustic Painting, Quilling, Sewing, Marquetry, Mixed Media and Oil Painting. Folk School Director JJ Jahr says, “Sign up and try something new! None of our upcoming summer classes require experience. All levels are welcome.”
If culinary arts are your thing, dig into our Folk School Epicurean Series with apple pie, handmade pasta, tamales and wine tasting. Also, world-renowned Master Sommelier Fred Dame joins us on Friday, July 29th for a Champagne reception and showing of Somm: Into the Bottle. Be sure to make a reservation for this exclusive evening. Visit the Camp Calendar for more details about this event and everything coming up in our Folk School.
With an Art Loft, theater, outdoor amphitheater and acres of inspiring scenery, the arts have a permanent home at Martis Camp. We hope to see you at these events and classes as we continue to write the story of our community and portray its beauty with bright strokes of color.
